Energy In A Cup? Coffee And Motherhood Can Go Together
August 14, 2007 6:49 am WAHM, Time For MomCoffee - Sin Or Savior?
As the 7 month-pregnant mom of a 20 month-old rebel with a cause…or at least she seems to think she has a cause…energy reserves can fluctuate like the stock market on a wild Friday afternoon. Of course a caffeine jolt is not the only reason to enjoy a cup of coffee, though it is the best reason to indulge during these “I-can’t-believe-I’m-still-up-writing” blogging episodes.
Let me just start with this, before I get nominated for the next stake-burning of the heretic event! Enough of the research I have personally done on consuming a little caffeine while pregnant has me convinced that I’m not endangering anyone’s health by treating myself to as much as two cups of coffee over a 24 hour period.
Actually, to be specific, two 8 ounce cups a day which averages 150mg of caffeine per cup, 300mg max per day. Now this doesn’t mean go nuts at Starbucks, because their 16 ounce (grande) cup of house blend…I know this from my Barista days …blasts 500mg into your system!
Once hoisted out of her crib, Maya literally hits the ground running and there’s just no way I’m going to keep up with her without this particular mothers little helper! Besides, since I was pretty young, and definitely since law school, that first cup has delivered exactly that ritualistic enjoyment every Folgers, Maxwell House etc. commercial has always sought to capture. It’s not an addiction, but a morning rite of passage I see no need to surrender.
But it’s really the second daily occasion that requires just the right cup! Yes…it’s the blogging…anybody else staying up past their bedtime to vent here in their WP editors? Now, I can’t have that second cup of coffee late in the evening, or I will truly be “up all night!” But if I can time it just right, between the end of dinner and Maya’s bath time…not only will I be able to find just the energy reserves I need to write here but also… it will just taste perfect!
But Only The Right Coffee
This is where the right coffee comes in. On both occasions really, morning and evening, a lousy cup of coffee just wont do the trick. Well, for the husband it doesn’t really seem to matter, he just loads it up with sugar anyway so it could come out of a vending machine in a warehouse for all he cares.
I, however, have a more highly developed sense of taste, and while I have a few different favorite brands, these are the two that I actually buy.
For my favorite Dark Roast Coffee I can’t beat the Traditional Blend from Community Coffee
Maybe it’s how it reminds me of the trips to New Orleans I took years ago, but I bet it’s just that it’s probably the best coffee blend for the money I’ve found so far.
For that morning cup when I really don’t want that heavy aftertaste or I need to drink, more than sip, my coffee, I prefer one of the house blends from Boca Java…maybe Boca Sunrise or Ocean Drive. Click here for $10 off your order of $50 or more. It’s good for anything at all on their site.
Guiltless Pleasure
Whatever your taste in coffees, teas or whatever else soothes you when you most need it, do a little research to make sure you’ll do no harm…then enjoy without guilt. And if your reading this because you’re also a midnight blogger… if a cup of java will keep those great posts coming…please…indulge for all of us!
